The four sections of this piece, set to three distinct musical styles (the last section being a stylistic reprise of the first), are representative of a four‐stage recurring cycle in an individual’s journey of transformation: awakening, loss, anguish, and re-awakening. The musical material in awakening and re-awakening is set to a five‐note scale using interlocking rhythmic motives. Loss explores a more lyrical, atmospheric style, and anguish employs atonal expressionism with angular melodies in the cello. Remnants of musical material from respective styles are interspersed discreetly between each section.
